GARGCITY

First description of our project's idea Wouldn’t it be great if no household waste was wasted? If each and every item of refuse was turned into something else – new products, raw materials, gas or at least heat?” – The Swedish recycling revolution (https://sweden.se/) Facts about waste • In 2012, 2,270,000 tonnes of household waste was burnt, and that way turned into energy. • The first incineration plant was set up in Stockholm in 1904. • The 32 plants in Sweden today produce heat for 810,000 households and electricity for 250,000 private houses. • Heavy metal emissions have been reduced by 99 per cent since 1985, even though Sweden emits three times more waste today. 1. What Problem do you want to solve ?

Garbage is available on every corner of the world. Every year 2.6 trillion pounds (approximately) of garbage is collected globally and not even ¼ is used for recycle or any kind of purposes. Developing nations do not have efficient skills, finance or know-how of how to recycle or utilise their garbage. Some of the develop nations like France, UK or Germany export they garbage to Sweden. The wealthy countries are develop enough to control this kind of technology and to develop it. What about countries who do not treat or recycle garbage at all? It makes the country dirty and unsafe which leads to diseases and causes environmental hazards.

2. Why does this problem exist?

Developing countries waste more but recycle which is not the case of non-develop countries. Having that gap between nations make the garbage’s issue still a discussion. Waste treatment in the world exist for different reasons. First reasons are the demographic growth and the new way of consuming. Indeed, people consume more and more through the evolution of production. It is a kind off, demand and offer idea. Population is on demand as we do offer a lot, for instance, new product, derivate ones, new and costly packaging and polluting. Develop countries recycle more their waste than in the past but the majority of the waste is exported in others countries for treatment. Developing countries meet a real problem about the waste treatment and its storage.

3. What breakthrough are you commited to creating?

Let’s clean the world! The impacts of solving the worldwide issue around bad waste management would be witnessed in several fields such as access to renewable energy for all, reduction of health problems triggered by dumped garbage. Finally, it caps pollution effects on the population and on the Earth To begin with, it would improve access to renewable energy. Indeed, it will be an advantage for developing countries to know how to reuse theirs wastes thanks to a recycling process in order to create energy. Such a solution could make people more aware about recycling and renewable energies. As waste is produced all around the world and especially problematic in the Southern countries, it is a way to simplify the access to energy for everyone. Moreover, using garbage to produce energy stays less expensive than developing a nuclear plant. As a consequence, electricity costs might decrease and be more affordable around the world. Our breakthrough is also to increase the capacity of developing countries to tackle health issues. In a village called Karungalpatti, numbers of mosquitoes and stray dogs have increased because of uncollected or dumped waste. This situation represents a risk for inhabitants, as stays dogs can bring illnesses and so do mosquitoes. Due to poor hygeneic conditions, typhoid, malaria and cholera have spread over the village. This situation illustrates that a better waste recycling could fix part of the health problem. Finally, waste dumping is against the environment, as it triggers soil contamination, or rivers / sea pollution. Reducing it will improve the quality of the air, soil, even water in certain parts of the world. Using renewable energy tends to reduce the greenhouse effect. It can have an impact on the "plastic continent", and decrease it. Such an initiative would have a great impact on the biodiversity, in the sea, on the earth and in the air.
